The sunny autumn weather will take a break in Bavaria in the coming days.

Polar air draws in and lets the temperatures rush down.

Munich - With a violent bang - in the truest sense of the word - late summer in Bavaria said goodbye on Monday night.

Storms and heavy rain have particularly raged in Upper Franconia.

Cellars and streets were under water.

Lightning strikes damaged homes and cars.

The rain is slowly disappearing again, but it is now autumnal cold in Bavaria.

(By the way: Our Bavaria newsletter informs you about all developments and results from the Free State about the upcoming federal election - and of course about all other important stories from Bavaria.)

Weather in Bavaria: Acid rain threatens in some parts of the Free State

Monday started in many places with thick fog and visibility below 150 meters, writes the German Weather Service (DWD). The last drops of rain are still falling in the Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria. There it can get wet and even thunderstorm again and again in the afternoon. Otherwise it remains cloudy in many places and still warm. In many cities in the Free State, the thermometer climbs again to 22 degrees. New rain * moves into the country from the west during the night. Individual drops can fall in Lower and Middle Franconia. The values drop to twelve to 14 degrees.

In the rainy areas, there may be a phenomenon on Monday that many may still be familiar with from the 1980s - acid rain.

Because a sulfur dioxide cloud hangs over Germany, writes meteorologist Dominik Jung.

This was blown to us by the southwest wind from the Canary Islands.

There the volcano Cumbre Vieja * has been raging on La Palma for days and spits out not only lava but also dense sulfur clouds.

When the rain washes the sulfur out of the atmosphere, it falls to the ground as acid rain.

This is particularly harmful to plants and trees, but the substance of buildings can also be attacked by the mixture.

However, the cloud does not last long over the Free State.

The wind turns from southwest to northwest.

Weather in Bavaria: Northwest wind blows polar air into Germany

Because the wind is turning, the weather * in Bavaria will also change over the course of the week. “Polar air flows into Germany from the northwest. It's now goodbye September summer, ”writes Jung. Not much remains of the 25 degrees in some places last weekend. In the middle of the week it becomes more changeable and cooler. It can rain again and again from Tuesday onwards. The temperatures are approaching 15 degrees in many places. This means that the thermometer drops ten degrees compared to the weekend. It is not yet certain whether October will be able to tie in with late summer September from Friday. In any case, Jung sums up: “It was a great late summer month with very high temperatures, little rain and a lot of sunshine.”
