Covid-19: the Ministry of National Education announces 1,254 classes closed

The situation continues to improve, both in terms of the closures of classes and establishments as well as the vaccine supply in schools.


Friday ritual now well established: this October 8, the Ministry of National Education sent the media its weekly status report related to Covid-19.

In this three-page document, one figure stands out in particular.

Of the 527,200 classes in France, 1,254 are currently closed, i.e. 0.24%.

After increasing in the weeks following the start of the school year, this number has only decreased since mid-September.

The ministry announced the closure of 3,299 classes on September 17, 2366 on September 24 and 1692 on October 1.

The current rule establishes that first-degree classes must be closed from the first proven case of Covid-19.

Jean-Michel Blanquer had declared on September 28 that an experiment aimed at testing all students to avoid systematic closure was going to be carried out in ten departments, but this announcement has not yet been followed up.

The tests will remain free in schools

In addition, four schools had to completely close their doors.

These establishments are located in the academies of Amiens, Dijon, Limoges, Bordeaux.

Last week, eight school structures had to resolve to send all their students home.

The vaccine supply in schools is also improving.

Since the start of the school year, 8,664 secondary schools out of 10,700 have offered their students aged 12 and over to benefit from a vaccination course.

Last lesson of this report of October 8: from Monday September 27 to Monday October 4, 368,923 saliva tests were offered to students and staff, and 186,281 were carried out.

These screenings in schools will remain free even after October 15, the date on which the tests will become chargeable for unvaccinated adults who do not have a medical prescription.
