113 towns in Saxony receive support for urban development

In Saxony, many municipalities can rely on financial support for urban development.

As the Ministry for Regional Development announced in Dresden on Friday, around 152 million euros will soon be approved for 113 cities.

Half of the money comes from the federal government and half from the state of Saxony.

In total, almost 200 construction projects are to be funded.

Dresden - Eight of them could be anchored in the corresponding programs.

Bernstadt, Glashütte, Hohnstein, Kamenz, Radeberg, Rochlitz, Oschatz and Wilthen benefit from this.

"Our municipalities are facing new urban development challenges: They need new urban development solutions both for the consequences of the corona pandemic and for climatic developments in order to keep inner cities and district centers attractive and liveable," said Regional Development Minister Thomas Schmidt (CDU).

Cities and municipalities in Saxony have called for the state to quickly participate in the new federal program "Gray Spots" for broadband expansion.

The state government and the state parliament would finally have to provide the necessary funds for the co-financing, said the Saxon City and Municipal Association (SSG) on Monday.

At the same time, they urge the funds to be paid out as quickly as possible.

The federal and state funds are available to cities in three programs.

The “Living Centers” program is about the revitalization and preservation of town centers and historic old towns.

Around 54 million euros are earmarked for this.

The “Social Cohesion” funding program aims to strengthen the community in parts of the city and districts and is endowed with 38.8 million euros.

With “Growth and Sustainable Renewal” (59 million euros), municipalities are supported in their economic and demographic change.
