A police officer is said to have mistreated two women in Neubrandenburg and even set one of them on fire.

Neighbors called for help and saved a baby.

The man was caught - and is said to be in custody for attempted murder.

Neubrandenburg - A police officer allegedly mistreated a 69-year-old woman and her daughter in a dispute and then set the 33-year-old on fire.

As a spokesman for the Neubrandenburg public prosecutor said on Tuesday, the 56-year-old official was arrested without resistance on Tuesday night near Rostock.

"We have applied for an arrest warrant for attempted murder and grievous bodily harm," said the spokesman for the German press agency.

It should be "in the broadest sense an act of relationship".

According to previous investigations, the man drove to the apartment of the 69-year-old mother of the acquaintances in the east of Neubrandenburg on Monday.

There was a dispute there, as a result of which the 56-year-old is said to have mistreated both women.

After being beaten several times, he set the 33-year-old on fire and fled.

Neighbors heard the noise, took the eleven-month-old 33-year-old toddler out of the apartment and alerted rescuers.

The fire brigade was able to quickly extinguish the fire in the hallway of the apartment, it said.

The 69-year-old tenant and the toddler were injured in a clinic in Neubrandenburg.

The severely injured 33-year-old woman was brought to a special fire clinic in Berlin.

But you shouldn't be in mortal danger.

Arson convicted: police honor "silent heroes"

The police in Anklam (Western Pomerania-Greifswald) honored four women and men from Western Pomerania for exemplary moral courage.

These citizens are representative of many "silent heroes" who supported the police, said the deputy chief of the police station, Arne Zarbock, on the occasion of the "day of moral courage" on Thursday.

Injuries caused by blunt violence were also found in both women, it said. The investigation led to the trail of the 56-year-old. The application for arrest is attempted murder because there was "base motivation" and it was a "cruel manner of killing," the spokesman said. According to the public prosecutor, the injuries were similar.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Interior Minister Torsten Renz (CDU) was stunned by the incident that affected a police officer.

"I wish the injured women a quick recovery," said Renz on Tuesday.

Now it is important to fully investigate the crime and - if the suspicion is confirmed - to initiate all necessary legal steps.

The Rostock police headquarters had initiated disciplinary measures and the man was prohibited from doing official business with immediate effect.
