Two men had their toy guns removed by the police near an underground car park in a shopping center in Weil am Rhein (Lörrach district).
A police spokesman reported on Friday that the 20-year-old and his seven-year-old friend waved the toy around.
Passers-by assumed real weapons and sounded the alarm.
Because on the Rhine - witnesses also wanted to hear the word "attack".
This then led to a large-scale operation on Thursday.
During the search of the men, two toy guns were found that they are said to have previously bought in the shopping center.
Both admitted that they had been fiddling with the pistols for a while.

Barn fire near Bad Belzig: Hotel also affected
An escalating barn fire in Kuhlowitz near Bad Belzig (Potsdam-Mittelmark) triggered a large-scale fire service.
According to initial findings, a barn in a four-sided courtyard caught fire on Sunday night for an as yet unknown cause.
The fire quickly spread to another barn in the neighborhood.
The fire also damaged the facade of an adjacent hotel, the police said on Sunday.

The further investigations would not have revealed any indications of an intended attack.
The police officers took the toy guns away.
This was done as part of the formal investigation, said a police spokesman.
