Petition against excessive hunting passes 100,000 signatures

2021-11-10T19:38:04.288Z

Three months before its end, the text proposing a better framework for this risky leisure has reached the threshold to be examined by the senators. The latter will launch a fact-finding mission.

Was it intended or not? The fact that the Senate publicly announces this Tuesday that it will examine the petition on the dangers of hunting entitled

"Death, violence and abuse linked to hunting: never again!" »

, Boosted the number of signatures on Wednesday. "

In 24 hours, we have collected more than 15,000 signatures and passed the 100,000 mark needed for the Conference of Presidents to examine our text,"

rejoices Léa, one of the members of the

"one day, a hunter" collective,

to the origin of this initiative with five other young women. They were all friends of Morgan Keane, a boy of only 25, killed on December 2, 2020 in the Lot while he was chopping wood in his garden. The hunter had taken him for a boar.

To prevent this blunder from happening again and to better supervise the practice of hunting, the six girls affected by this disappearance posted a petition on September 10 in which they formulated five specific requests, in particular

"the prohibition of hunting on Sunday and Wednesday, on the whole of the French territory and without any possibility of derogation ”

.

Another demand:

"stricter training and strengthening of the safety rules"

for hunters as well as the strengthening

"of penal sanctions up to the level of the offenses committed"

.

For their proposals to have the chance to be examined by the Senate, they had six months to collect 100,000 signatures, that is to say until March 10. It only took three. The unfortunate news of recent weeks with in particular the death of a 67-year-old motorist hit in the neck near Rennes following the ricochet of a bullet fired by a hunter who aimed at a deer brought water to their mill. 48 hours before Thursday, October 28, a 29-year-old man received a stray bullet in the chest in Vallières-sur-Fier, Haute-Savoie, while walking on a trail with his mother. On Sunday, November 7, it was a hunter who was seriously injured in the thorax, on the edge of the forest in Landricourt in the Aisne, hit by mistake by a bullet from a colleague.

Don't curse hunters

So many regrettable miscellaneous facts which motivated the elected officials of the High Assembly to take up the matter as quickly as possible.

"At the speed at which the signatures are going, we have no doubt that 100,000 will be reached

soon," Sophie Primas, the president of the Economic Affairs Committee in charge of this issue with the Committee on Economic Affairs

,

told

Le Figaro on

Tuesday evening. Laws.

We would like the Senate to examine in depth, far from the pre-election emotion and agitation, the issue of hunting safety, the regulations relating to the possession of hunting weapons and the penalties that may result from possible infringements ”.

While reassuring the hunters that the Senate, firmly anchored in rural areas, was favorable to them.

"There is no point in throwing anathema on the hunters, we must study and put in place effective and proven solutions

," continued the elected.

As soon as it is set up, the mission will hear all the stakeholders: the promoters of the petition, of course, as well as representatives of hunters ... ”.

The hunters reacted as best they could.

"

It's democracy, we will discuss with the Commission,

reacts

to Figaro

Willy Schraen, president of the National Federation of Hunters (FNC)

.

We have seen how the report will be conducted, I am not someone who lives outside the law.

It's not something that makes me happy.

It is a relentless attack on minorities.

The fact of being able to enter the Senate with a petition of 100,000 signatures in six months can give us ideas afterwards

”.

The Conference of Senate Presidents, Wednesday, December 1

"

That the Senate takes up this issue is a good thing to dispassionate the debate,

adds Thierry Coste, political advisor to Willy Schraen and also to Emmanuel Macron

. Even if one dead is always one too many dead, last year there were 7 deaths linked to the practice of hunting. In 9 out of ten cases it was a hunter. It is necessary to put into perspective compared to the 20,000 deaths linked to domestic accidents. We will contribute constructively to the Senate mission. Where we are weak compared to non-hunters is in information and signage on the ground to warn them of ongoing hunts. Dialogue must be stepped up with the various hiking, mountain biking and horse riding federations

”.

For its part, the collective “

one day, a hunter

” is also ready “

to participate in the senatorial mission”

. He had still not been contacted by the upper assembly on Wednesday that his petition was going to be considered. The next conference of Senate presidents will take place on Wednesday, December 1 and should give the green light to the launch of an investigative mission.

Senators already want to move quickly and put forward concrete proposals before the presidential election

.

"We are going to do substantive work on the usefulness of hunting, an activity which should not be done at the cost of human life,"

insists François-Noël Buffet, senator from the Rhône, chairman of the Laws committee.

Once the mission is launched, it should take two to three months to examine things seriously and make proposals with the feeling of wanting to provide solutions and not that of burying the file ”
