Austria imposed isolation measures on unvaccinated people against the Corona virus today, as winter approaches and infections increase across Europe.
And the Reuters news agency quoted the Austrian government as saying, "About two million of the population of nine million people are now only allowed to leave their homes for limited reasons such as traveling for work or going to the markets to buy basic goods."
"My goal is very clear ... to make those who have not been vaccinated receive it, not to isolate those who have not been vaccinated," Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg told ORF radio, explaining the announced closure.
The aim of the closure is to address a jump in infections to record levels, caused by the fact that the proportion of those who received a full vaccination in Austria reached about 65 percent, which is one of the lowest rates in Western Europe.
Last week, the seven-day average number of infections in Europe was more than half the number globally, and about half of the latest deaths were recorded, according to a Reuters tally.
Governments and companies fear that a prolonged pandemic could derail the current fragile economic recovery.
