Aaron Aspis, who is most identified with teaching mathematics in Israeli schools, passed away last night (Wednesday) at the age of 87. Aspis has authored a series of math books, taught in middle schools and high schools.
He was born in 1934 and grew up in the Neve Tzedek neighborhood of Tel Aviv, and was a member of the Keshet Yom family.
His father worked as a construction worker.
He attended the Tachkemoni religious school.
Later, he recounted that he was a good student in mathematics, "but a great naughty one who slipped into movies at the Eden Cinema."
One of his classmates was renowned actor Haim Topol.
After military service and work in Sodom, Aspis began studying mathematics at Tel Aviv University, and in parallel with his studies also began teaching.
Upon graduation he began working as a full-time teacher - in the morning he taught in high school, in the afternoon in an external school and in the little time he had left he taught private hair.

His books revolutionized. Aaron Aspis (Photo: Official Website, aviados from Wikipedia)
In the past, he said that "as a young and ambitious clergyman I came to the conclusion that the books are not suitable for students, do not promote them. Frustrating. So I started thinking of another form." At first he composed worksheets for his students, and these became sought after by his peers in the profession. "I realized that if 20-15 teachers are interested in the material I wrote, maybe it is possible to publish a math book," Yitzhak Ben-Horin from Maariv told a reporter.
Given the difficulty of getting the book into the education system, he took a revolutionary marketing step and distributed his book for free to math teachers. Comments soon began to arrive and there was a demand for the book. Later, he began publishing another book and another book - and his books sold in the thousands. The demand was so great, and so for example it is written that in 1987 90,000 of his books were sold. Demand has also spawned an forgery industry of Aaron Aspis books.
"My books are not a revolution, not a patent. Rather, simplify things. Submit problems in an absorbing way, make a rating of difficulty and continuity between a problem and its predecessor. I learned from every lesson and drew conclusions,"Told later.
His books revolutionized and made the mathematics profession accessible to many teens.
Ora Sheinerman, who founded the Shachar Institute school network, explained to Ben-Horin that "Aspis' books have revolutionized both methodically and in terms of printing and aesthetics. His books are pleasant to read. He was the first to write the answer after the question so you do not have to scroll "The end of the school. 90 percent and more of the schools use his books. The achievement is especially great in light of the conservatism of the teachers," she said at the time.
