Difficult to implement: cycle superhighways need a lot of space

Green city councilor Gerhard Blahusch wants to make the daily commute easier for commuters who cycle to work.

The city should therefore consider together with the neighboring municipalities where so-called cycle superhighways can be implemented.

Germering - In the Environment and Urban Development Committee, the municipal bicycle commissioner Thomas Wieser has now made it clear that this idea is not so easy to put into practice.

Wieser explained that there are requirements for the designation of high-speed cycle paths or, alternatively, high-speed cycle connections that cannot be met on Germeringer Flur.

Expressways must therefore have a minimum lane width of four meters in order to make two-way traffic possible without any problems.

According to Wieser, three meters are sufficient for so-called cycle priority routes.

Both requirements would not even be met by the existing route to Geisenbrunn, explained the bicycle expert to the city council.

This mixed cycle and footpath is still comfortable for cyclists - but only because pedestrians are rarely on the road.

At the S4

Concrete considerations for the construction of a bicycle superhighway are currently only on the part of the district.

According to Wieser, he is currently investigating whether a connection along the S 4 railway line is possible.

The state capital itself is examining the feasibility along the S 4 from the Altstadtring to the district boundary of Fürstenfeldbruck.

The contact with neighboring municipalities requested by Blahusch is already in progress, Wieser continued.

There is a regular meeting of the cycling officers in the district.

The contacts with Krailling have been the most intensive for a long time.

The long unsuccessful efforts of the city to achieve a bicycle connection from Neue Gautinger Strasse through the forest to Krailling and Gauting could now unexpectedly quickly become a reality.

The Kraillinger planning committee recently put this at the top of a priority list.

The implementation of the project, which is estimated at around 1.4 million euros, is made easier thanks to new funding from the Free State.

The highway bridge

Mayor Andreas Haas pointed out, however, that the implementation would be very difficult.

Thomas Wieser added to this by pointing out the bottleneck on the motorway bridge, which is located on Germeringer Flur: There is simply no space for an additional cycle path here.

But the continuation parallel to the road in the Kreuzlinger forest is extremely problematic.

Bannwald would have to be sacrificed here for a cycle path.

He cannot imagine where the required compensation areas for reforestation should be proven.

Krailling has already sketched out a solution to this problem.

It could run along the fence from the Krailling Oil company's tank farm - but to do this, the fence would have to be swiveled.

In conclusion, OB Haas promised that talks with Krailling would be intensified.

The city is also trying to find a solution to the bridge problem.
