Two suicide bombers were intercepted today (Monday) near the international airport in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, in what appeared to be an attack by pro-Iranian militias on the basis of the US military in the country.
Iraqi security forces told Reuters that a U.S. air defense system using machine-gun fire had intercepted the aircraft and that no damage had been done to the base or its forces.
A spokeswoman for the American coalition responded to the attack in a brief statement that read: "Two suicide drones were intercepted without causing any damage.
"This is a criminal attack on an active civilian airport."
Those most likely behind the attack are pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, which have in the past carried out a series of UAV attacks on American targets and those marked as political rivals, including Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qadimi, who was captured and attacked by Iranian-made UAVs.
Officials say the attack is a revenge attack on the assassination of former Quds Force commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Suleimani, who was killed by a U.S. drone near Baghdad International Airport exactly two years ago. Earlier this morning, hundreds of Iranian supporters gathered near the US embassy. And ignited the flags of the United States and Israel.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian media confirmed that the Houthi rebels in Yemen had seized a ship carrying the United Arab Emirates flag in the Red Sea Gulf. It is claimed that this is a cargo ship carrying medical equipment.
The fate of the crew is still unknown.
