The Russian Defense Ministry announced the start of the Russian peacekeeping forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) mission to carry out the tasks entrusted to it to protect vital installations and key infrastructure in Kazakhstan.
The ministry said in a statement today, carried by the Russia Today website, that Russian peacekeeping units that had previously arrived on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan began carrying out the tasks entrusted to them to protect vital facilities, airports and major social infrastructure facilities.
"The main tasks of the CSTO peacekeeping forces include protecting important government and military installations in Kazakhstan and assisting Kazakh law enforcement in stabilizing the situation and returning it to the legal sphere," the ministry explained.
Earlier, the Ministry of the Interior of Kazakhstan announced the arrest of more than 5,100 people during the recent events in the country.
"So far, 5,135 people have been arrested throughout Kazakhstan," the ministry said in a statement.
