The branch office of the Complementary Independent Participation Counseling (EUTB) is housed in the evangelical parish hall.

- Katharina Hump originally wanted to start work in October last year - in the newly renovated and now barrier-free evangelical community center in Schongau.

The room on the first floor next to the community hall, which the woman from Apfeldorf shares with employees from another counseling center, was rented.

"Then everything dragged on a bit, but now we could start." Twice a week and by prior agreement, she wants to be there for people who have a disability or who are threatened by an impairment.

"We also drive home if someone can't come to us."

Many people are so impaired due to a chronic illness or an accident that they are permanently restricted in life and need help.

She is a qualified “ex-in recovery companion”, has experience in psychiatry herself, and as an “expert in mental health”, as she describes herself, can empathize well with the situation of clients.

The native of Apfeldorf offers free advice for the EUTB Oberbayern Südwest according to the Federal Participation Act, "and that's supplementary and independent, that's particularly important," emphasizes Hump.

One is not part of an association and club like Caritas or the Diakonie Herzogsägmühle, but can give free advice.

What compensation for disadvantages can you actually receive under certain conditions?

Special protection against dismissal, more vacation, support from the inclusion office, information about tax relief for required aids or the conversion of a car to make it suitable for the disabled - the possibilities are diverse, according to the participation advice service.

Those affected receive special offers and assistance with a severely handicapped pass.

Disadvantage compensation often unknown

This compensation for disadvantages is often unknown and is used far too seldom by people with disabilities.

From cheaper to free tickets on local public transport, free rides for accompanying persons, easier parking to help with the conversion of apartments to make them barrier-free or discounts on tickets for events - an application for a severely disabled person's pass can be worthwhile for the person concerned.

Many would not even know what benefits they are entitled to.

"The main thing is that those affected have more rights of self-determination within the area of ​​their disability, which is also a question of equality," says Hump.
