The remains of the "Endurance" ship, which was crushed by a block of ice and sank to a depth of 3,000 meters off the coast of Antarctica more than a century ago, were found in good condition, a search team said today (Wednesday).

The three-masted sailing ship, headed by Ernest Shackleton, was lost in November 1915 when it tried unsuccessfully to be the first to cross Antarctica.

Previous attempts to locate the remains of the wooden ship failed due to the harsh conditions of the sea and the frozen del, at the bottom of which the vessel, which was about 44 meters long, drowned.

Its location was recorded in the diary by Captain Frank Worsley.

However, the Endurance 22 mission, organized by the Falkland Islands Maritime Foundation and using the advanced submarine "Sabrath", which was equipped with high-quality cameras and scanners, was able to locate the ship's remains.

The cameras showed the ship in remarkably good condition, with its name on the mast clearly visible.

"We are stunned by our good fortune," said Manson Bond, director of the research mission.

"These are without a doubt the best shipwrecks I have ever seen," he said of the state of preservation.

The delegation, led by British Pole explorer John Shears, operated the South African icebreaker "Agulas 2" which also investigated the effects of climate change on the region.

The remains of the ship were located six kilometers from its last location.

Despite getting stuck in the ice, 28 crew members managed to come back alive and their survival story is considered one of the greatest in human history.

They crossed the frozen sea, ate seals and penguins and sailed in three lifeboats to the uninhabited elephant island.

From there, Shackleton and some of the crew crossed about 1,300 miles in a lifeboat to

southern Georgia, where they sought help from a whaling station.

- His Imperial Antarctic left London.
