It all started with a student from Bolivia.

The Freising world shop is now celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Freising

– There is reason to celebrate: The Weltladen Freising is 40 years old this year.

What started as a small action group in the basement at the beginning of the 1980s has long since become a permanent institution for all Freising residents who want to make a conscious effort to make a statement against the cheap industry with washed-out supply chains with their purchases there and instead stand up for sustainability and fair trade do.

Numerous guests were welcomed with champagne and cake on Saturday, and many a memory was refreshed.

It all started in a rural youth group

How did it all start back then?

This question about the beginnings of the world shop was not so easy to answer on Saturday, because those responsible made it clear that many things used to be set up just like that, without making big notes about it.

What Renate Finsterholzl, who was on board with the founding at the time, can still remember well: "We weren't that many people back then, maybe a dozen." Discuss the topic after a student from Bolivia brought the idea of Third World aid through imports to the cathedral city.

“Back then we sold alpaca things like sweaters after church or at the Corbinians festival.

That got things rolling."

What began with the working group "Sunflower" culminated in the founding of the association "Partnership with the Third World Freising" in 1982 and the opening of the "Sunflower World Shop" in the basement of the parish home of St. Georg.

The fair trade pioneers initially sold coffee, tea and bananas, all from fair trade of course, in Freising.

We had to move twice for reasons of space

However, over the years the premises in the Pfarrheim-Keller became much too small, also because the people of Freising were increasingly interested in fair-trade goods and the range of products on offer was expanded as a result.

The first move was therefore scheduled for 1998.

The world shop moved into its next domicile just a few houses away from its current location and offered a significantly larger range there – until it finally became too small there too, and in 2016 it was time to move to the premises at Ziegelgasse 14.

In this regard, Monika Vogel from the board of directors thanked the participants for their great commitment, who have kept the world shop running for 40 years with a lot of time and even more heart and soul.

What is important to Vogel: "Right now we must continue to work for justice in the world."

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Freisinger celebrates ten years as a Fairtade town

Green City Councilor Charlotte Reitsam praised the good interaction with the Fair Forum working group, who also recalled another anniversary: This year Freising is also celebrating ten years as a Fairtrade city, which is why an extensive ceremony is planned in July.

"The World Shop is a great enrichment for our city," emphasized Reitsam.

With a cup of fair coffee, the guests on Saturday could also look at the "MÄCHTIGunfair" campaign exhibition for this year's world shop day in Ziegelgasse and listen to the best bluegrass sound from the duo Rudi and Monika.
