Opinion | Amos Schocken in Anxiety: Religious Dare to Celebrate Jerusalem Day | Israel today

2022-05-30T15:01:35.967Z

The publisher of the Haaretz newspaper tweeted sharply against religious Zionism and thus actually demonstrated the statements against the left that bother him so much.

So what really shocked Haaretz editor Amos Schocken, a Zionist and cultural figure?

Another tweet claimed that the left is demonizing everything reminiscent of Zionism and the flag, and that the left has lost every drop of sheer logic.

Schocken may not have meant it, but he actually demonstrated the tweet that took him out of his composure.

Schocken's statement that religious Zionism is a virus can be compared to historical moves that must not be compared.

But do not compare, and in a disease as in a disease - it is important to understand the background.

Once the left established the state and the kippah wearers were normal people and gave the left aid.

Today the kippah wearers are the carriers of the most serious disease that can destroy Judaism, and give it the character of a monster.

Were it not for Jerusalem Day, which was celebrated mostly by an extraordinary people, and masses of traditional and religious Zionists who rejoiced without cynicism in the capital, it is doubtful that the prophet Amos would have spoken openly and revealed to us his feelings: the left built the state, the right provided aid.

You don't have to be a certified psychologist to feel the anxiety: 55 years ago, non-religious paratroopers liberated the Western Wall, understood the magnitude of the hour and got excited on the way to the Lions' Gate.

Whoever read "The Temple Mount is in our hands" did not wear a kippah.

The generals of that time found their place mainly in the Labor Party, but today's Israeli left despised the values fought for by the founding generation of this country, which went to the end without asking for whom it was fighting, left or right or future settlers.

The songs composed for Jerusalem by the kibbutzniks Yoram Tahar Lev and Dan Almagor are currently sung by the flowers of religious education, while in Haaretz the norm is to kill bereaved mothers on the back page.

Anyone who fears the fate of the country, like Amos Schocken, must worry.

If someone who fears the fate of Judaism should strengthen his ethos at home, and not insult those who cultivate the heritage of the land on a daily basis.

That is, the Land of Israel.

Were we wrong?
