On drugs, drunk and bitterly rejected: A man is said to have thrown a hammer at a subway train out of anger.

He now has to answer for that in court.

Nuremberg – The attack caused a stir in September 2021: a 47-year-old man threw a hammer at a subway car in Nuremberg.

He broke through the glass and missed a young woman's head by a hair's breadth.

Another passenger was slightly injured by the splinters of the shattering window.

Nuremberg hammer thrower in court: drugs, alcohol, rejection

Since Tuesday, June 21, the man has had to answer before the Nuremberg District Court.

The public prosecutor accuses him of attempted murder in eight cases and damage to property.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the accused accepted that the eight people in the compartment could be fatally injured.

According to a justice spokeswoman, the man stated that he could no longer remember the crime – but he was able to identify the hammer as his from a photo.

The 47-year-old had his defense attorney provide information about the background to the crime.

Accordingly, he has been taking drugs for several years – that evening he also consumed heroin and amphetamines and drank alcohol.

Before the attack on the subway, he had tried to get in touch with his ex-wife, his ex-girlfriend and his sister.

The attempt remained, however, and the women rejected it.

Humiliated, drunk and on drugs: a man threw a hammer on the subway

After the unsuccessful attempts to make contact, he rode the subway through Nuremberg “in a state of considerable frustration and aggression”.

At a stop, he then suddenly threw a hammer at a subway car, which smashed through the window and just missed a young woman.
