After the heat of the past, there is a threat of thunderstorms and heavy rain in NRW from Thursday afternoon.

The weather service before possible severe weather.

Cologne – Whether in the outdoor pool, at one of the various bathing lakes in Cologne and the surrounding area or in a shady spot in a park: In the past few days, people in North Rhine-Westphalia have been enjoying the bright sun at temperatures of around 30 degrees, summer has really arrived in the most populous state.

And even if the number of degrees on Thursday (June 23) continues to scratch the 30-degree mark and even exceed it in some areas, it could get really uncomfortable in NRW in terms of precipitation from the afternoon onwards.

Despite the continued high temperatures, the German weather service DWD warns of possible storms with thunderstorms, heavy rain and storms, as reported by 24RHEIN.

Weather NRW today: first sunshine, then thunderstorms and heavy rain

  • From the afternoon there may be isolated strong thunderstorms in the area and west of the Rhine

  • There is a threat of local heavy rain with volumes between 15 and 25 liters per square meter in a short time and stormy gusts of up to 70 km/h (Bft 8)

  • In the course of the night to Friday around in the south-west half from the south increased heavy showers and thunderstorms, locally stormy, with heavy heavy rain of 30 liters per square meter within one hour or up to 50 liters per square meter within a few hours

In the morning the sun gives everything again, in Cologne, for example, it can get up to 32 degrees.

From the afternoon or early evening, there can be isolated strong thunderstorms, especially west of the Rhine.

The probability of this is initially assessed by the DWD as low.

During the night of Friday (June 24th) things could really get going.

Then there will be more heavy showers and thunderstorms as well as heavy rain (between 30 and 50 liters per square meter), especially in the south-west half of NRW.

Weather NRW on Friday: Heavy showers and thunderstorms possible - locally heavy rain

  • First heavily cloudy to overcast and in places showery, partly thundery rain

  • From the midday onwards from the south-west transition to changing clouds with only a few, but heavy showers and thunderstorms, locally with heavy rain, slowly easing in the evening

  • In the night to Saturday loosening clouds and gradually abating shower and thunderstorm activity

On Friday morning it will be cloudy at first, before the thunderstorm could strike again in the morning.

Then, coming from the south-west, the transition to changing clouds with individual, heavy showers and thunderstorms is possible;

local heavy rain may occur.

In the night to Saturday, however, the rain should subside, it will clear up and the risk of thunderstorms will decrease.

It was only at the beginning of June that there was also a weather warning for NRW.

Heat warning for NRW: Increased risk of forest fires on Thursday - several regions affected

For this morning (June 23), the DWD is also issuing a heat warning for the Münster and Mindener Land.

There is a high risk of forest fires there (level 4 of 5).
