The Indian authorities announced the death of at least 170 people as a result of the unprecedented rains this month, which caused floods and landslides in the northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya.
"The floods hit 32 of its 35 districts, affecting more than 5.45 million people, 136 people were killed and 37 are still missing," Xinhua news agency quoted local government officials in Assam as saying.
In turn, the state disaster management authority in the state of Meghalaya said: "The heavy rains have killed 34 people, while 11 others are still missing due to landslides and floods."
The floods left behind a noticeable destruction in the two states, as they flooded thousands of villages, destroyed crops and damaged hundreds of homes.
