The former federal chairman of the FDP, Martin Bangemann, is dead. He died at the age of 87, as FDP leader Christian Lindner announced on Twitter.
There, Lindner also expressed his sorrow for the "passionate liberal," as he wrote in the short message service.
Bangemann was born in Wanzleben in what is now Saxony-Anhalt in 1934 and studied law in Tübingen and Munich.
In 1963 he joined the FDP.
Later he first became deputy chairman, then state chairman of the FDP in Baden-Württemberg.
From 1985 to 1988 Bangemann was Federal Chairman of the FDP.
Under Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the doctor of law became Economics Minister.
From 1989 to 1999 he worked as EU Commissioner in Brussels.
He then moved to the board of directors of the Spanish group Telefonica.
