The Franconian Axel Schmitt from near Schweinfurt can now call himself the best baker in the world.

He was awarded the title in Iceland.

Munich/Reykjavik - In the past few days, the bakery trade has been on everyone's lips, mainly because of the statements made by Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) in the ARD program "Maischberger".

In addition to concerns about costs, insolvency and personnel, there is now positive news from the traditional trade.

A German – more precisely a Franconian – has been voted “World Baker of the Year 2022” in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik.

The lucky winner is no stranger.

Franke Axel Schmitt is the world's best baker of the year and a "role model for the industry"

The master baker Axel Schmitt from Frankenwinheim (Schweinfurt district), who is also known from television, secured the title and thus the highest award that the bakery trade can bestow.

The 41-year-old is also known as "Wackenbäcker" because he has already delighted metal fans there with his baked goods.

He is also a welcome guest on Sat.1 breakfast television.

The press release of the Central Association of the German Bakery Trade eV says about him: "Axel Schmitt stands for a modern bakery trade, he is a role model for the industry and is also a successful entrepreneur."

He rocked it: The Franconian master baker and bread sommelier Axel Schmitt (left) was named "World Baker of the Year".

Speaking of entrepreneurs.

The Franks have, so to speak, sucked up the baking trade with their mother's milk.

He grew up in a fourth-generation bakery household.

After training as a journeyman baker in Kürnach, he completed further training in Würzburg as a confectioner.

In 2003 he passed his master baker's exam with flying colours, and in 2016 he was also appointed bread sommelier with top marks.

Baker world champion Axel Schmitt is happy about the award - "that rocks"

The 41-year-old was delighted with the award.

"It's crazy, it rocks.

I would like to thank the UIBC for their decision and the Central Association for my nomination.

I am a passionate baker and see the award as an incentive to continue promoting the most beautiful profession in the world.

I promise.” Last year's winner was Domi Vélez from Spain.

There was also praise and recognition from the President of the Central Association of German Bakers, Michael Wippler.

“We sincerely congratulate Axel Schmitt on his title.

He shows so much energy, passion and love for the bakery trade and combines it with unbelievable coolness and nonchalance.

It stands for successful entrepreneurship and modern craftsmanship.

Thanks in part to him, word got around the world that the German bakery trade rocks in the truest sense of the word.”
