This yoga instructor in Mexico was one of the most wanted fugitives by the FBI: "I'm innocent," he cries, "I guess not everything"

Friends and students of the yoga teacher León Ferrara reported his disappearance on Tuesday in Guadalajara (Mexico), believing that he had vanished without a trace after taking his two dogs for a walk.

Three days later, they discovered that the 52-year-old teacher actually had another name, Jorge Rueda Landeros, and was not missing but arrested for murder: he had been on the FBI's most wanted fugitive list for 12 years, accused of killing a professor, Sue Ann Marcum, from Bethesda University of Maryland.

"I'm innocent.

I suppose not for everything, but obviously for what they are accusing me of, ”he told the newspaper El País by phone from the South Prison in Mexico City, where he is being held awaiting extradition to the United States.

“We are happy that they were able to capture him after so many years,” said Marcus Jones, chief of the Montgomery County Police Department, The Washington Post reported.

"It's a fabulous result to have this guy in custody," he added, praising the work of the Mexican authorities and the FBI.

Sue Ann Marcum, 52, was found dead in the basement of her home in Bethesda, Maryland on October 25, 2010. Police found evidence that someone had forced the door open and struggled, and that some items were missing, as well as like a car.

According to the file issued by the FBI, Rueda Landeros is a 6-foot-tall (1.82 m), 200-pound (91 kg) Hispanic man with brown eyes.

He was a yoga and Spanish instructor, he was born in Ciudad Juárez, with dual nationality (American and Mexican).

“It has been very strong.

I feel like I'm grieving because I killed a friend.

I know León, but I don't know who Jorge is, ”one of her students in Mexico, identified only as María, told El País.

Rueda Landeros has been charged by Montgomery County authorities with first degree murder, punishable by up to life in prison, and also faces a federal charge of fleeing to avoid prosecution.

His fingerprints were found at the crime scene, but he claimed it was because he spent time in the house, saying authorities have "mixed up" "everyday" problems with his ex-partner to frame him for the crime.

After Marcum's death, the FBI alerted that Landeros fled to Mexico or Central America.

Years later, in December 2022, the FBI received information that Landeros lived in Guadalajara and on the 13th an operation was coordinated with the Mexican authorities to capture him.

He was taken into custody without incident, according to police.

"In all these years, have you followed the case, everything that was said about you?" El País asked him by phone from jail.

"No, I didn't follow anything," he replied, "once I disappeared from the radar, I completely forgot about it. I still have difficulty responding to that name of Jorge. I hardly have any of him in me anymore."
