The freezing temperatures and heavy snowfalls that hit the United States were caused by an encounter.
That of a depression, described as a “bomb” by meteorologists, because it widened very quickly in the northeast of the United States, and of an anticyclone, also very powerful, located in northern Canada.
“As they approached each other, these two masses rotating in opposite directions created a gear that caused the expulsion of a huge bubble of polar air towards the south
, explains Tristan Amm, forecaster at Meteo France.
This cold descended to the center of the United States, and even overflowed into Louisiana, where frosts were recorded.
This well-known weather phenomenon is reinforced by the geography of the North American continent, which opposes no obstacle to the polar air.
In Europe, the bubble would have been heated during its crossing of the Atlantic Ocean and the North Seas.
If it is spectacular and very rare, the episode is not extraordinary…
