Medicinal and aromatic plants are considered promising crops, and it is reliable to achieve added value through the manufacturing process, whether as dryers, powders, or oils and water extracts. Syria witnessed the entry of several companies into the field of these industries.
Dr. Majid Qaisah, director of publicity in one of the companies manufacturing products that rely on aromatic plants, explained that their company is working to plant some aromatic, medicinal and wild plants and cooperate with farmers in their lands, to obtain organic plants free of pesticides and chemicals, leading to the production of highly effective preparations according to Quality specifications and acceptable prices.
The company produces aqueous extracts, cold-pressed oils, and distilled oils that fall under medical categories. There are two types of products in general: cosmetic “skin, hair,” and therapeutic “digestive problems, joint problems, respiratory problems,” and others, indicating that the project is the first project A Syrian turned to the production of aqueous extracts, such as rose water, chamomile water, lemon balm water, lavender water, and others.
And about their experience by relying on their own resources, Qiyasah said: We cultivated the Damascene rose, in addition to other herbal plants, in an area of land surrounding the factory in the countryside of Damascus, relying on organic farming and without the use of pesticides, and away from pollution sources, to secure the factory's requirements of raw materials with high quality and lower costs.
Qiyasah stressed the importance of spreading the culture of awareness and introducing the local herbal and aromatic raw materials that grow naturally or are grown on private farms, and that achieve added value to the product. Work is also ongoing to develop natural herbal and cosmetic products to maintain the quality of production in coordination with the Syrian Standards and Metrology Organization and international bodies. Relevant to ensure the export of the Syrian product to the global markets.
Regarding the importance of this type of industries in supporting the national economy, the agricultural engineer, Omar Al-Shalat, the former head of the Damascus Chamber of Agriculture, explained that the process of manufacturing medicinal and aromatic products and other herbs and plants that grow naturally in our country, or those that are grown on farms, is an advanced step towards achieving added value instead of From exporting them as raw materials, pointing to the importance of developing the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants and completing them with the manufacturing process because they constitute a natural pharmacy and a real national wealth that greatly supports the national economy, calling for increased interest in agricultural scientific research to develop this agriculture and support, encourage and train farmers to cultivate a larger number and wider areas of medicinal and aromatic plants and providing the necessary support to industrial facilities that contribute to the process of collecting, marketing and manufacturing them.
