A deadly fire broke out in Mei Huai House, Mei Lam Estate, Tai Wai today (6th), resulting in 1 death and 6 injuries.
Firefighters found accelerant in the fire unit, and the fire spread quickly, which was unusual. Therefore, the cause of the fire was considered suspicious, and the serious crime team of Sha Tin Division took over the investigation.
The 45-year-old female head of the household surnamed Zhang suffered burns on her face and hands and was found by firefighters in the stairwells 26 and 27; her 15-year-old daughter was burnt in the unit, and Zhang's 44-year-old boyfriend was inhaled by smoke. He was unconscious in the bathroom, and the initial injury was inhalation injury.

Wang Tan, assistant fire chief of the Fire Department, said that the fire alarm was reported at 5:46 this morning, and he arrived at the scene within 4 minutes. A total of 60 personnel from 9 fire trucks and 5 ambulances were dispatched to the scene for rescue. In addition, the fire investigation team and Fire dogs were also at the scene to assist.
The fire area is 6 meters by 5 meters, the fire is very violent, and the smoke is dense.
The firefighters dispatched a hose and a smoking cap team to fight the fire, and the fire was largely extinguished in about 20 minutes.
The firemen broke into the unit and found a 15-year-old female dead near the gate, and found the male householder in the toilet, unconscious.
In addition, the female head of the household was found in the stairwell of the floor involved. Her face and hands were burned, and 4 neighbors (aged 10 to 63) on the floor were sent to the hospital because of inhalation of heavy smoke.
The cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious because of the accelerant found at the scene and the rapid spread of the fire, which is unusual.
Wang Tan continued that since the fire broke out in the early morning, most of the residents were fast asleep, and the firefighters needed time to evacuate them down the building.
During the fire, firefighters evacuated 30 residents on different floors, and another 50 residents evacuated to a safe location by themselves.

Police Superintendent Huang Xiaoxuan, Commander of the Tianxin Division of the Police, pointed out that the 45-year-old female head of the fire unit was surnamed Zhang, the 15-year-old deceased was her daughter, and the 44-year-old male injured was Zhang’s wife’s boyfriend. All three held Hong Kong ID cards. The family does not have a record of domestic violence.
Team 2 of the Serious Crime Squad of Sha Tin Police District took over the follow-up. The police and firefighters will continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
Government Laboratory staff searched for evidence in the unit where the fire broke out.
