UDI: Hervé Marseille, a very central centrist

PORTRAIT – New president of the UDI, the boss of centrist senators is an essential interlocutor of the executive as of LR.


"Dear Hervé, never forget this famous saying from Ferdinand Foch: 'My center gives way, my right moves back, excellent situation, I attack!'"

This is the advice slipped to Hervé Marseille by his friend Jean-Louis Borloo at the UDI congress at the beginning of December.

When LR elected its president, Hervé Marseille triumphantly took over the reins of the UDI – 93.39% of the vote but the only candidate – after the legal setbacks of Jean-Christophe Lagarde.

“The presidency of the party was not part of my ambitions, it was the circumstances that brought me there.

Everyone considered that I was in the best position to gather and maintain unity at a difficult time,”

he confides.

Circumstances, therefore… And here he is propelled to the front of the stage.

"The UDI is at the center of the center,"

he laughs in his Senate office, overlooking the Luxembourg Gardens.
