Professor Joseph Dituri from the University of South Florida will try to break a new record and live 100 days submerged underwater.
The aim of the experiment is to measure the effects that confinement and extreme pressure have on the human body.
Dituri will inhabit a small 9.2-meter-square capsule located 9.4 meters below the surface, at the Jules Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida.
From there, she will teach her students online and undergo laboratory tests to monitor her health.
One of the projects that the scientist will carry out during his stay is to test an artificial intelligence tool that detects when people have a disease or are injured and require medical attention.
Dituri, who spent 28 years as a diver in the US Navy before becoming a teacher, will also undergo psychological tests to measure the effects of isolation on mental health.
