Brand Studio for Nature Tourism

Winter arrives and the southern tip of our country offers dazzling landscapes that unite the sea, mountains, lakes, forests and steppe.

The End of the World Route, one of the seventeen that make up the Natural Route program of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Nation, invites you to discover one of the most beautiful and mythical regions of Argentina. It is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and snow sports.

Tierra Mayor
Valley Here is the Cerro Castor winter resort, the southernmost ski center in the world, ideal for snowboarding, alpine skiing and cross-country skiing, an activity so popular that Ushuaia was declared the National Capital of Cross-Country Skiing. On this hill there are other activities, such as an ice skating rink, snowshoeing, snowmobile and sleigh rides.

Beagle Channel
From Ushuaia depart excursions that allow you to enjoy icons of the area such as the lighthouse Les Eclaireurs and the Harberton stay. You can also visit the Isla de los Lobos —inhabited by large colonies of sea lions—, the Isla de los Pájaros and Martillo Island, one of the few places in Argentina where, in addition to Magellanic penguins, you can see a small colony of headband penguins and, occasionally, specimens of king penguins. On the coast of the canal, you can also spot the exclusive black tug, much sought after by birdwatchers. Navigations are subject to weather conditions.

Tierra del Fuego
National Park is the only place in Argentina where the Patagonian forests and the Andes mountain range meet the sea, creating a unique landscape of mountains, bays and fjords. It offers unforgettable views from its viewpoints and there are walking trails that are enabled throughout the year. A great option to get to the park is by means of the End of the World Train, which runs seven kilometers along the Pipo River, passing through the Macarena waterfall, the tree cemetery and the majestic lenga forest to the final station, already inside the park. If the visit is made by car, in winter the use of chains or snow tires is mandatory. It can also be reached with excursion in a tourist bus.

Lakes Escondido and Fagnano
In the Garibaldi pass, National Route 3 reaches 450 meters above sea level, the highest point of its more than three thousand kilometers of travel. From there, there are breathtaking views of Lakes Escondido and Fagnano. All this area can be traveled by car, micro or excursions, either from Ushuaia or from Tolhuin.

Atlantic Coast Reserve
With an extension of 220 kilometers long between Rio Grande and the bay of San Sebastian, the reserve was created to protect the wintering grounds of thousands of migratory birds, which each year arrive from the northern hemisphere. It is a must-see for lovers of bird watching and for those who want to know the beautiful landscapes of the north of Tierra del Fuego (it houses species such as the sea becasa, the reddish sandpiper, the white rump sandpiper, among others). The city of Rio Grande is an excellent starting point to visit.

How to get there and where to sleep

Most flights arrive in Ushuaia, the provincial capital connected to Tolhuin and Rio Grande through National Route 3. It has a great offer of accommodation of all categories. Some estancias offer accommodation, gastronomy and excursions.

Key facts

It is important to respect the maximum speeds on the route, because there may be loose animals. Between Tolhuin and Ushuaia, the route is mountainous, with many curves. Always check the state of the roads before leaving. In winter it is mandatory to use snow tires or chains on some routes. The climate is very cold and changeable: you always have to have warm and waterproof clothes on hand.
