Dutch sprinter Fabio Jakobsen, victim of a terrible fall during the arrival of the 1st stage of the Tour of Poland on August 5, is now out of danger but must expect a convalescence of several months, according to his team.
“They (the doctors, editor's note) removed 130 stitches from his face. He has only one tooth, his palate is not yet healed, and one of his vocal cords is still paralyzed. He does not yet know how to breathe properly, ”said his manager Patrick Lefevere, who visited him in the hospital in a statement. And as many feared, the medical toll is heavy.
Several months of convalescence planned
“He's in a much worse shape than Remco Evenepoel (who crashed ten days ago during the Tour of Lombardy). According to doctors, Remco's fractures should be healed in six weeks, but Fabio Jakobsen is talking about a convalescence of several months, ”he said.
Jakobsen, defending champion of the Netherlands, crashed heavily on August 5, shortly before the finish line of the first stage of the Tour of Poland. The 23-year-old was crushed by compatriot Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo) in a sprint at full speed, on a downward false flat, and thrown over the safety barriers.
