Organizers of the Olympics, shifted to summer 2021, have announced they will launch a refund campaign for spectators.

Faced with a second wave of the pandemic hitting the planet this fall, the Organizing Committee for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games announced on Friday the reimbursement terms for ticket holders who will not be able to attend the events. next summer.

“For ticket holders residing in Japan, Tokyo-2020 will accept refund requests for Olympic tickets between November 10 and 30 and between December 1 and 21 for Paralympic tickets, the statement said.

For people residing outside of Japan who have purchased tickets through authorized resellers, other procedures will be in place.

If we are unable to offer the option to attend the Games due to Covid-19, we will provide an additional option to request a refund.

"

Almost 4.5 million tickets have already been sold for the Olympics and nearly 1 million for the Paralympics, according to the organizers.

The latter, however, did not detail the number of tickets sold in Japan compared to abroad, merely recalling that foreign spectators represented around 10% to 20% of the public at previous Games.

Initially planned for the summer of 2020, the Olympics had been postponed to 2021 - from July 23 to August 8, 2021 and from August 24 to September 5 for the Paralympic Games - due to the coronavirus.

These date changes have created a huge headache, particularly with regard to ticketing.

Japanese organizers said in July that all tickets already purchased would be valid for the same events in 2021.

Cancellation of the Games not yet considered

Organizers have promised subsequent reimbursements if health measures force them to limit the number of spectators at the event.

Last-minute compensation is also being considered in the event that an event is canceled during the Games because an athlete contracts the virus.

Many doubts continue to weigh on the holding of the Games or on the presence of spectators, total, partial or even none.

Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), warned in an interview this week with the South Korean television channel SBS that having full stadiums would "perhaps not be possible".
