The mythical club in the North East of England has had little regard for the royal family for thirty years.

“Liverpool Football Club is saddened by the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family.

Like other English clubs, the Reds, 6-time Champions League winners, paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday at the age of 96.

Their meeting against Wolverhampton this Saturday at Anfield, like all those in the United Kingdom, has been postponed.

However, Liverpool FC supporters are known for their lack of regard for the royal family and symbols of royalty across the Channel.

Last May, the supporters had copiously whistled Prince William when he burst onto the lawn of Wembley during the final of the FA Cup against Chelsea before re-offending a few minutes later when the God save the queen, the British anthem, sounded.

Hillsborough as a starting point

For what reasons ?

The supporters of the Mersey club blame the establishment in particular for the gradual decline of their city and the management of the Hillsborough disaster, considered to be stifled.

This tragedy - the worst in the history of British football - which occurred in April 1989 on the occasion of the semi-final of the FA Cup between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest disputed in the stadium of Sheffield Wednesday marked the club and the city of North West England due to the large number of children among the 97 victims.

Court proceedings ruled in 1991 that it was an accident caused by some of the Liverpool supporters forcing their way into an already full stand and causing a crash in which the victims were suffocated or fatally injured. injured.

The verdict did not satisfy the families of the victims.

The latter considered that the action of the police that day was the cause of the disaster.

They then tried for twenty years to have the case reopened.

In 2012, the report of an independent committee presented a very different view of events by highlighting the responsibility of the police.

Two new legal proceedings took place in 2016 and 2019. The first overturned the 1991 judgment of accidental deaths for which supporters were responsible.

The second led to the acquittal by the criminal court of the officer who was responsible for the security of the match and the spectators.
