Strategy with iPhones and Apple Watch: Apple scratching the middle class

2019-09-11T10:58:34.490Z

The cameras are the most striking innovation of the 11er iPhones. But more important could be another change - and that an oldie goes into extra time.

The presentation of the new iPhones was almost exclusively about their new photo skills. That's right, after all, the camera is one of the two criteria that consumers repeatedly refer to as a smart phone purchase decision. And Apple has made some progress in this area. For one thing, all the latest iPhones have at least one dual camera, and finally, there is finally a night mode.

The fact that the slow motion selfie mode, already known as Slofie, is a success, seems to be foreseeable now, after several journalists posted videos from the trial section. Apple manager Phil Schiller has also announced a "deep fusion" photo mode for the fall, in which an artificial intelligence of nine pictures taken in rapid succession selects each of the best components and then put together to such a sharp and detailed photo, as with conventional means would be impossible.

Tried and tested: These are the 11er iPhones

More energy

Even more important than the camera could be the advances in battery life that Apple has promised. Primarily due to optimizations in the new A13 processor, which powers the new iPhones, the battery life of the iPhones 11 Pro and Pro Max should be four or five hours longer than on the iPhone XS and XS Max. If these claims are confirmed by independent tests, this alone might be enough for many as a purchase argument.

Ultimately, however, it is also a seeming triviality with which Apple substantially upgrades its iPhones. Instead of the usual, small but slack 5-Watt plug-in power supplies are at least the Pro models now power supplies, which have 18 watts of power and should recharge the battery much faster. This step was long overdue. Too bad that the iPhone 11 is still the old charging plug included, which looks quite outdated.

Smartwatch: This is the Apple Watch Series 5

Courage for more Apple Watch

The Apple Watch Series 5 is after the functional progress of recent years, especially the built-in ECG function, now again more about fashion and personalization, just to the computer clock as a lifestyle object.

Instead of delivering the smartwatch with one of two standard bracelets - white in the light case colors, black in the dark ones - buyers now have the opportunity to order their wish bracelet for the desired watch.

Two sizes, four case materials and several bracelets span a range of 1000 possible combinations, through which an online configurator leads, at prices ranging from 449 to 1749 euros. For many users, this may correspond to a price cut, because they no longer have to buy a second bracelet for their watch, but can order the right one for them.

More choices

In view of the stagnating smartphone market, however, it was probably Apple's most important decision to expand its iPhone range. The expensive precious models now stands at 699 euros comparatively cheap iPhone XR, but especially with 529 euros now almost settled in the middle class segment iPhone 8 to the page.

Our review of 2017: iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in the test

Especially with the latter offer, Apple could succeed in countering the dwindling number of buyers. Even though the iPhone 8 is already two years old, it is certainly not scrap metal with a true-tone display, water-tightness and a wireless charging function.

Of course, the margins in this price range are not as abundant as Apple is used to. But the group can attract more customers for services such as Apple Arcade and Apple TV +. With regard to shifting the revenue from hardware sales to services, this is certainly not a stupid plan.
