With the newly added small field mode "Volta", "Fifa 20" throws the dribble turbo. The football game, from autumn to autumn, a new version appears, so sets an interesting counterpoint to the almost sacred gravity of the usual eleven-to-eleven games.
In backyard cages or even on a high-rise roof, self-made characters, as well as world football stars, trick through all manner of game variations, from three to three to futsal. Opponents are tunnelled or dubbed by gang - and who shoots a goal, shows acrobatic jubilation in "Fortnite" -man. This is reminiscent of the set "Fifa" leash "Fifa Street", but also the legendary hall mode of "Fifa 97" and "Fifa 98", which many players mourned for years.

"Volta", which is both an extra mode and part of the so-called kick-off mode, is a cool innovation. "Volta" is more action-packed and simpler than the rest of "Fifa", based on the gameplay but on the eleven-against-eleven games, so that series fans hardly have to change, but also beginners come along well.

Something unnecessarily affects the online compulsion around the "Volta" story mode. This part of "Fifa" will only work if connected to the game servers - even if you attack computer-controlled opponents in the course of the story alone.
It is also disappointing that manufacturer EA Sports does not allow online soccer matches against friends: "Volta" can only be played via the net via the league mode against human random opponents or offline against friends on the couch. This seems half-hearted in 2019 and fallen out of time.
Faster sprints, more valuable goals
There are too many artificial restrictions for other, sometimes new fun modes like "surprise ball". In these duels, players sprint twice over the pitch or goals count threefold.
With friends, you can only play nonsense games like "surprise ball" or the "Survival" known from "Fifa 19" if you sit together in front of the console or connect via the card collecting mode "Fifa Ultimate Team" (FUT) , But if you're hoping for a Bundesliga duel in fun mode with friends from the net, you're looking for this game option in vain.
It seems a little like EA Sports wants to win even more players than already for "FUT", the most popular but also questionable "Fifa" mode. Players gradually build their dream teams, but can gain an advantage by buying so-called Fifa Points with real money.

The eleven-against-eleven games, which are also played in "FUT", offer little new this year. If Cristiano Ronaldo did not run across the court in a jersey of "Piemonte Calcio", one would hardly notice as a neutral spectator that "Fifa 19" is not running, but his successor. The reason for the jersey swap: The exclusive license for Juventus Turin, the eternal rival "eFootball PES 2020" this time, EA had to miss Ronaldo's team a fancy name.
Hope for the rebound
The fake jersey has become accustomed quickly, and even in the control of most of the old remains: The flow of play, the player movements and the ball control has changed almost nothing. Only on the ball physics the developers seem to have screwed: The ball now jumps easier from the foot and hops on passes rather over the lawn. Nevertheless, you can continue to bridge the midfield comparatively quickly with good players. And if you are weak at the end, you can always hope for a rebound.
Challenging for serial fans is most likely the control of the defensive line - EA Sports will make this year the manual defending attractive. The free kick and penalty system has also been slightly modified, which now demands more training.
Ultimately, however, the kicks are strongly reminiscent of "Fifa 19". One might think that the energy that EA Sports put into "Volta" was missing when revising the main simulation game, which was staged more often than simulation, and whose 19-version was often criticized by e-athletes. Whether they will be happier with "Fifa 20" can be difficult to predict after a few test days. With "Volta", "surprise ball" and Co. "Fifa" this time but more varied and party suitable than ever - and that should be at least casual players happy.
