I like to take the train when I have to travel. Usually, this is much more relaxed than driving or flying. I can make myself comfortable in the seat, read, work - or even play. Either with your smartphone, but mostly with a portable console. I prefer playing - with a few exceptions - still right buttons, control crosses and sticks.
Was the range of devices until a few years ago even greater, so there is at least since the setting of Sony's PlayStation Vita on the go only Nintendo consoles. Although the 3DS is getting old, but still a great console with many timeless games and the recently released Nintendo Switch Lite - a switch without removable controller and TV outlet - is a device that you can take along great. It is easier and better to handle than the normal switch.

The games I've presented are not all new - but they are still fun and regularly find their way into my console and into my carry-on luggage.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Action-packed titles are not necessarily suitable for train rides, a jerking when driving over a switch can already decide the boss fight. So I like games that are a little bit slower, so I'm a big fan of Toad, the mushroom game from Nintendo's "Super Mario" games. Why I always like to pack "Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker"? Even if it is a bit older, it has lost none of its charm.
Captain Toad is a waddling creature with mushroom cap that I send through a 3D puzzle. It can only run, not jump or shoot. His weapons are timing and planning. That's why I turn the levels, look at them from all angles, find new ways, learn how to avoid traps and how I can keep sweating despite all the ease.
The game is not always easy: some levels require combination skills, some skill. And pleasant for traveling: The levels are not very long, which is why I like to get the game out of my pocket on shorter sections.
Suitable for: Short rides, moments when you want to breathe deeply and really do not tolerate anything fast

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
For long train rides or a laid-back game on the sofa: "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" is the remake of a legendary Game Boy game from 1993: protagonist Link is stranded in the storm on an island, which he slowly opens up. The game works like a big puzzle. With ever new tools, I manage to reach places that I've seen long before. In between, I fight against crows or moblins, electrified green slime balls.
I try to defeat a ghost in the clay jug, divide a drop eye, or push biting worms back into their holes. I explore palaces, try to walk through forests or swamps or jump through holes in the ground. And annoy me, when my destination station is announced, I save the game and the switch has to wrap up.
Suitable for: Long train rides, flights or quiet evenings on the sofa

Boxboy! + Boxgirl!
The game concept of the "Boxboy!" Series is simple: I am to steer a box with small legs through different levels to the finish. The box can make more boxes, stack and then use as a bridge or stairs to avoid traps or activate switches. I like the simple drawing style, the lack of jewelery, and the way in which a few ingredients can create extremely intricate puzzles that provide enough distraction on shorter trips. No boredom.

Gorogoa
There are these trips where I stare out of the train window for a long time and I start to dream. An effect that can be synonymous with "Gorogoa". In this puzzle game, painted little pictures have to be reassembled. The player has to open new paths in the pictures, connect or fill in gaps.
I think the game is beautiful, but sometimes very difficult, which is why I keep getting it out, looking for new ways for a while, then putting it aside and staring out of the train window.
Suitable for: Long journeys on which it does not bother, if one needs half an hour for the solution of a small riddle
