Galaxy S10 and Note 10: Update makes fingerprint sensor safer

2019-10-24T13:07:40.663Z

Samsung's current flagship smartphones can be protected by fingerprint from unauthorized access. Of some cases, the devices could be misleading. Now the corporation is reacting.

Samsung is providing a software update these days to help eliminate fingerprint recognition errors on the Galaxy S10, S10 +, Galaxy Note 10 and 10+. The group announced on Wednesday the news agency Reuters. According to her report, the South Korean company apologizes to its customers through the Samsung Members service app. In South Korea, the corresponding update "AndroidCentral" is already available.

On October 13, the newspaper "The Sun" reported that a British cell phone owner had noticed that her Galaxy S10 smartphone could be easily unlocked by third parties, even though it was supposed to be secured with her fingerprint.

The explanation for this behavior of the phone was found directly in the article: The woman had put her cell phone before setting up the function in a cheap, designed especially for the screen protector envelope. Apparently this case had the device messed up when storing the fingerprint. The cell phone could then be unlocked, for example, by the husband of the woman.

Samsung confirmed a few days later that the problem may occur when a smartphone recognizes three-dimensional patterns on certain silicone protective covers as fingerprints. Already at this time a software update had been promised. "Samsung takes product security very seriously and will increase security through continuous improvements and updates to improve biometric authentication capabilities," the company said, using its service app.

Lots of ridicule on the net

The problems of Samsung's flagship devices had been addressed in recent days, among others, the popular in China payment services Alipay and WeChat Pay. On some Galaxy devices, they temporarily suspended payment functions that allow the fingerprint to be released. Meanwhile, Samsung had to put a lot of ridicule on the net. The company had staged its ultrasound-based fingerprint recognition system as a particularly good protection mechanism.

Anyone who wants to make sure that he gets an update for his device, according to Samsung, according to the menu activate an update notification. From "Settings" you go to "Software Update (s)" and from there to "Automatic Updates", where you drag the slider to the right. If you want to have your device actively checked for updates, tap the "Download updates manually" button.

Users facing the fingerprint problem should delete all previously saved footprints and remove the screen protector, Samsung recommends, and re-register their fingerprint after applying the update.
