Tougher penalties: federal government increases fines for traffic offenders

2019-11-06T13:22:48.565Z

Reckless driving is more expensive: Who parks on pedestrian or cycle paths, will pay in the future almost twice as much as before. Even harder it hits motorists who do not form a rescue lane.

The Federal Government has decided higher penalties for offenders. The deputies voted today for a corresponding proposal by Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU).

Accordingly, the fines for parking on pedestrian and cycle paths as well as holding in the second row and on so-called protective strips for cyclists - for it will be due in future up to 100 €. So far, it was at the most 55 euros.

If other road users are hindered or endangered, or someone is parked in the prohibited area for more than one hour, another point in the driving license register in Flensburg threatens.

Penalties for unauthorized use of the escape route

It is even more expensive when motorists drive through a rescue lane without permission. Then traffic offenders have to expect fines between 200 and 320 euros as well as one month driving ban and two points. The same punishment now threatens motorists who do not form a rescue lane.

Emergency services, fire brigades and police should be able to reach an accident site through the emergency lane, even if there is a lot of traffic. Cases in which motorists drive through the emergency lane to avoid a traffic jam repeatedly cause indignation.

Fines increase will come in 2019

The Federal Cabinet decided to make further changes to road traffic - including the very controversial possibility of opening bus lanes for cars in which at least three people are seated. This should make it more attractive to form carpools.

The increase in penalties should be included in the fine catalog in 2019, as the ministry announced. The countries still have to agree.
