The US company Apple now leads the Black Sea Peninsula Crimea under pressure from the Russian State Duma as Russian territory - but only for users with a location in Russia. "Apple has implemented its corrections in the geographical names of the Crimea and the city of federal importance - Sevastopol - implemented in accordance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation," said the head of the Duma Security Committee, Vasily Piskaryov.
Users in Russia will now see the "Autonomous Republic of Crimea" with the addition "Russia". Russia had repeatedly demanded, under threat of severe penalties from Google, to change the card designations. Google, however, assigns the Crimea in his services to any country.
Apple gave it on request to first no opinion. Outside Russia, users continue to see Crimea as an Autonomous Republic - but without the addition of "Ukraine". Russia had incorporated the international peninsula of Ukraine in 2014 against international protests. Piskarjov announced to check the cards regularly.
Spicy is the case because the US has imposed sanctions against Russia for Crimean annexation in addition to the EU. Companies that accommodate Russia in the Crimea issue, are usually punished with harsh sanctions of the West.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadim Pristaiko reacted with annoyance to the change.
IPhones are great products. Seriously, though, @ Apple, please, please, stick to high-tech and entertainment. Global politics is not your strong side. #CrimeaIsUkraine
- Vadym Prystaiko (@VPrystaiko) 27 November 2019Let me explain in your terms, @ Apple. Imagine you're crying out that your design & ideas, years of work & piece of your heart are stolen by your worst enemy but then smb ignorant does not give a damn about your pain. That's how it feels when you call #Crimea a land.
- Vadym Prystaiko (@VPrystaiko) 27 November 2019On Twitter, he called for the technology company to rethink and described the Crimea as the "heart" of his country. The company should stay with what it knows: high technology and entertainment. "Global politics is not their strong point," wrote the diplomat. Apple is not represented in Ukraine - unlike in Russia.
