The Facebook-owned Instagram photo app will now require new users to specify their registration date to filter ads by age and prevent minors from being exposed to age-inappropriate content. So far, the only requirement to register with the site has been a statement from the registrant that he is at least 13 and rarely required proof of age.

Gambling and birth control ads are the type of advertisements that are restricted to older audiences according to Instagram's policies and laws, but Instagram said advertisers were not the cause of the new demand. This is the first time Instagram has asked surfers to identify, as until now browsing the app has been completely anonymous, unlike Facebook that requires full identification. The date of birth will not be visible to the other Instagram users.

Vishal Shah, Instagram's product manager, addressed the issue and told Reuters the agency "Understanding what people's age is is very important for the work we do, not just to create an age-appropriate experience, but to meet the veteran general who doesn't allow access for the young."

However, Instagram will not attempt to verify the correctness of the information, as minors are usually unable to prove their age. Existing users will also be able to continue using the app with no age rating, in almost all cases. The new requirement will soon respond to an artificial intelligence system developed by Instagram, whose role will be to estimate the age of the user according to the content he uploads and their frequency.

In the coming weeks, Instagram will add an opportunity for celebrities and businesses to block messages from people they don't follow, and creators will be offered the option of blocking minors from viewing content they upload, as a result of the new requirement.
