The 49-year-old Prosciente joined the band in his youth thirty years ago after the death of Israeli guitarist Hillel Slovak from an overdose. He first played on their album "Mother`s Milk" released in 1989. Their next album, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" catapulted them to consciousness. In 1992 he abandoned the band and became addicted to hard drugs, which led him to replace all his teeth. After leaving the band he released his first solo albums. In 1998, when he was claimed to be drug-free, the band returned to guitarist Dave Navarro (also known as Jane Addictan). The band recorded with him, among other things, the album "Californication" which brought the band back to the top of the rock world, and his guitar playing had a great contribution to it. The album sold 15 and a half million copies. In December 2009 announced the abandonment of the band.

He also served as a studio guitarist for the advanced rock band De Mars Volta from 2002 to 2008. In addition, he has collaborated with many artists and ensembles, including Duran Duran, Ziggy Marley, Johnny Cash and George Clinton. He was highly regarded, and was ranked 18th on the list of the 100 best guitarists of all time by Rolling Stones Magazine in 2003, and also entered a similar ranking of the magazine in 2011, this time 72nd. He was also included in the Rock 'n' Hall of Fame as a member of Hail Hot Chili Pepperz in 2012, but did not attend the ceremony.
