Turkey: Constitutional Court Orders End of Wikipedia Block

2019-12-26T14:02:05.416Z

The online lexicon Wikipedia has not been accessible in Turkey since 2017. The country's highest court has now ruled that the ban is illegal. The Wikimedia Foundation had sued.

The Turkish Supreme Court considers the Wikipedia block in Turkey, which has been in effect for around two and a half years, to be incompatible with the constitution and demands that it be lifted. This was reported by several media, such as the newspaper "Cumhuriyet" and the state news agency Anadolu.

The court considers that the blockade of the online lexicon violates freedom of expression. The judgment had been sent to a court in Ankara for implementation. The organization Wikimedia Germany called the judgment a great success.

The non-profit organization Wikimedia Foundation had lodged a complaint against the ban with both the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Blocked only in two countries

Wikipedia has not been available in Turkey since April 2017. At the time, the Turkish telecommunications authority stated that the reason for the blocking was that the website incorrectly claimed that Turkey supported terrorist organizations. A court upheld the decision and, according to Wikimedia Germany, appealed to two English-language Wikipedia articles that were damaging to the Turkish Republic.

Turkey and China are the only countries where Wikipedia is completely blocked.
