It is through a message on Instagram that Jeff Bezos, the boss of Amazon and the richest man on the planet, according to the ranking of Forbes magazine, announced the creation of a fund to fight against climate change. He brings 10 billion dollars (9.2 billion euros) of his personal money on a fortune estimated at more than 131 billion dollars. The first grants will be made from this summer to scientists, projects to fight global warming defended by "activists" and even to non-governmental organizations.
“Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet. I want to work with others to amplify the known means and to explore new ways to fight against the devastating impact of climate change on this planet that we all share " , indicated the new patron of the climate, who thus joins initiatives launched in particular by other billionaires.
The fund will be called in all modesty the “Bezos fund for the Earth”.
The announcement by Jeff Bezos comes twenty days after 300 group employees criticized Amazon for its environmental policy. The American group emits around 44 million tonnes of CO2 per year, due to its logistics activities and product deliveries on the one hand, but above all by its huge server farms of AWS (Amazon Web Services), which has become one of the most important companies for “cloud computing”, cloud computing. These emissions represent more than 10% of France's annual greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Climate Watch association.
