The same Easter message every year: mega traffic jams and long waiting times at the borders. But this year everything will obviously change, the ADAC believes.

  • The Easter weekend is the traffic jam highlight of the year.
  • Every year, the ADAC warns of long standstills on the motorways.
  • But everything is different this year.

The corona virus has changed Germany a lot. Nationwide there is a ban on contact and in many federal states people are only allowed to leave the house for compelling reasons. This will also have an impact on Easter traffic. The ADAC assumes this in its traffic jam forecast for the long Easter weekend.

ADAC: Little traffic expected at Easter, except on Maundy Thursday

Easter is usually the peak of traffic jams in the year. This should not be the case this year, due to the initial restrictions. ADAC President Dr. August Markl explains: "In some federal states, trips without an urgent reason are prohibited, but also in those parts of the country where trips are theoretically conceivable, we would like to ask the population to refrain from trips that are unnecessary, if possible unfortunately also visits to relatives. "

However, the automobile club assumes that increased traffic will be expected at least on Maundy Thursday , April 9th. This day was one of the five most congested days of the year in 2019. Commuters in particular are still on their way home at this time, which is why there may be short delays at construction sites and on the metropolitan highways.

ADAC: More trucks traveling on highways at Easter

ADAC also expects a little more traffic on Easter Monday , April 13, when the long weekend ends and commuters drive back to work. Increased truck traffic can be expected on the Easter holidays. In all federal states, the ban on Sundays and public holidays for trucks has been lifted for the time being. This is to ensure the supply of food to the population.

Heavy Easter travel abroad cannot be expected due to the corona pandemic . The borders are largely tight. Entry and exit only possible for valid reasons. Before driving within Germany, you should find out about the current restrictions in the respective federal states, for example on the Interior Ministry website.
