If you want to transport the offspring by bike, you should at least get a child trailer when there is more than one child to transport. Tips for buying and practicing.
Munich (dpa / tmn) - At the latest when cyclists want to take two children with them, they better choose a child trailer, advises the TÜV Süd. This brings more safety and comfort to both cyclists and small passengers. The children can sit in the trailer much more comfortably than on child seats. A stable chassis also provides more protection around the outside.
Wide track for more driving stability
When purchasing, the testing experts recommend models with a wide track and slightly flared wheels. This ensures a more stable road and cornering. The seat belts should be attached to fixed locations, for example on the frame.
Other aspects are a stable frame with rounded edges, a roll bar as well as a textile net and plastic protection. The latter can prevent road dirt, splash water and rain. When buying, the children are better off: This shows whether the model of their choice offers them enough space.
Just how heavy the trailer is does not say anything about its stability and quality. When choosing, buyers should therefore consider which routes they usually have to cover. If you have to cover long, hilly routes, you will drive better with a light sports model. But even those who have to pass an underpass several times a day with a trailer and two children could look forward to light models. When buying, the TÜV Süd advises to pay attention to the "GS" test mark.
Practice with empty run
Before the first trip with children can start on board, parents should first practice without them. The small crew simulates an appropriate weight in the trailer. This way, newcomers can find out how to brake with the team and how it behaves in curves. Slight inclines and descents as well as a slalom course should not be missing during training. This also applies to emergency braking.
