Volvo, limit of 180 km / h to improve safety

A maximum speed limited to 180 km / h for all cars produced by Volvo. The decision is part of the promise made last year by the Swedish car manufacturer that had announced its intention to limit the maximum speed of its new cars, in order to further reduce as much as possible the number of accidents in traffic with serious consequences and fatal. In addition to having a maximum speed limiter, every new Volvo from now on will also be equipped with a Care Key, which allows those who drive a Volvo to set additional limitations on the maximum speed of the car, useful for example when lending the car to other family members or to younger, inexperienced drivers. The speed limit of 180 km / h and the Care Key device, constitute a signal launched by Volvo regarding the dangers of excess speed and underline the position of Volvo Cars in this regard. "We believe that a car manufacturer has a duty to help improve traffic safety - said Volvo Cars Safety Center manager Malin Ekholm - and our speed limitation technology, like the debate it stimulated, fits perfectly in this line of thought. The limitation of the maximum speed and Care Key help people to reflect and realize that speeding is dangerous, while providing greater peace of mind for drivers and promoting better behavior by motorists " . The problem with speed, according to Volvo's analysis, is that when certain limits are exceeded, the vehicle's safety systems and intelligent infrastructure are no longer sufficient to avoid serious and fatal consequences in the event of an accident. This is the basic reason why vehicle speed limits are placed in most western countries, although speeding remains a widespread problem and a major cause of road accident deaths. Research has shown that, on average, there is still little understanding of the dangers associated with speeding. As a result, many people often tend to drive too fast and have a poor ability to adjust the car's speed to traffic conditions.

In addition to speeding, drunk driving and distraction are two other points of great concern for traffic safety and the car manufacturer is pursuing initiatives to be able to control these aspects of human behavior, through work in the safety that will lead to the introduction of new functions in future production cars.
