Post-Gaddafi chaos has made Libya the preferred route for migrants, often stranded in the country in dire conditions

The revenge was terrible. For reasons still unknown, a 30-year-old Libyan smuggler was killed by illegal migrants, according to the Ministry of the Interior of the Government of National Unity (GNA), based in Tripoli and recognized by the international community.

A massacre followed. In response, the family killed 30 migrants and injured 11 others. All this took place in the city of Mezdah more than 150 km south of Tripoli.

Twenty-six migrants from Bangladesh and four Africans died. Eleven other people, whose nationalities were not specified, were injured and admitted to Zentan hospital, 170 km southwest of Tripoli. The ministry has promised to prosecute the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Thousands of illegal immigrants stranded in Libya

The chaos that followed the fall of the regime of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 made Libya the preferred route for migrants from East Africa, the Sahel and Asia seeking to reach Europe.

Several thousand of them are stranded in Libya, in deplorable conditions, sometimes kidnapped or tortured. Their situation has become even more critical since the outbreak in early April of a new armed conflict south of the capital Tripoli.
