Six men, including a minor, were charged and imprisoned for settling scores against a background of drug trafficking, intervened after the lynching of a young man in Rennes whose images had been broadcast on the internet, announced the prosecution Friday.

The six men and a 45-year-old woman were arrested Tuesday morning. At the end of their police custody, the six men, aged 17 to 26, were charged and imprisoned for attempted murder in an organized gang and association of criminals. They face life imprisonment, a statement said.

The woman, indicted for association of criminals with a view to the preparation of a crime, was placed under judicial supervision.

The assault posted on Twitter

At 10 p.m. on April 10, a man, originally from the sensitive Blosne district, and suspected of delivering drugs in the Villejean district, was beaten up by ten people.

"These are the risks of the job", commented Gilles Soulié, interregional director of the judicial police (DIPJ) of Rennes during a press conference, specifying that the victim, aged twenty years, had been imprisoned for drug trafficking on discharge from hospital.

The video surveillance images of the lynching scene were broadcast on April 21 on Twitter by the police union Synergie-Officers.

Shots in the neighborhood

Following this lynching, a series of gunshots were heard the same evening and the following few days in the two districts concerned.

“The authors went to shoot everything that moved on the point of deal. They were not specifically aimed at an individual. The idea is to say: now we are the bosses in the sector, “added the boss of the PJ.

Eight settlements of accounts have taken place in Rennes since the start of the year, compared to 4 for the whole of 2019 (in Nantes, there were 28 in 2019).

"I will not let Rennes territory be the scene of this type of settling of scores. Everything will be done so that the legal price to be paid is as high as possible ”, underlined the prosecutor Philippe Astruc.

Asked about the distribution of video surveillance images by Synergie, the prosecutor indicated that he had not sued the union because it was not "necessarily obvious to know" that the images came from "municipal video surveillance".
