While your cell phone is debating between 2G, 3G and 4.5G connections, the mobile phone powers are already talking about the networks of the future . Following announcements from major Chinese companies, South Korea announced its 6G plans on Friday, which include a pilot test for 2026.

Although 5G is still in its initial adoption phases in many countries around the world, South Korea hopes to commercialize its next generation, 6G, between 2028 and 2030, as stated by Prime Minister Chung Se-kyun, and reported in the Business Korea newspaper.

For the development of the new 6G technology, South Korea will invest 143 million dollars (200,000 million won) over five years starting in 2021. Its pilot project, in 2026, will be focused on health technology, immersive content, autonomous driving, smart cities and smart manufacturing.

The new 6G data networks promise to be 50 times faster than the current 5G, with transmission speeds of up to 1TB per second and a reduction in latency down to 0.1 milliseconds, ten times less than that of 5G .

Private companies such as South Korean Samsung also began to work on the roadmap for the arrival of the 6G, which they estimate will be commercialized from 2028 and become general in 2030.

The world's second-largest cell phone maker said in a document that it hopes that next year the ITU-R, a sector of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) responsible for radio communication, will begin working to define a vision for 6G.

The head of Samsung Research's Advanced Communications Research Center, Sunghyun Choi, said that even though the commercialization of the 5G data network is still in its early stages, it is never too early to prepare for 6G.

Likewise, Choi stressed that the investigation of the 6G at "full scale" will begin from this year, according to the ZDNet site.

But, although the 5G network is in a very early phase of deployment and adoption, Chinese companies also embarked on the conquest of 6g.Huawei and Xiaomi announced various developments of this network of the future, in fact , Donald Trump also asked Ericcson and other companies a few months ago to start working on it to win the telecommunications race against China.

Lei Jun, CEO and founder of Xiaomi said last May that the company is already working on the 6G network, as well as on satellites that carry the Internet to areas where there is no or little coverage. In fact, this last idea was also worked on for some years by Facebook and Starlink, Elon Musk's company.

In Finland, for example, the 6Genesis project already has an investment of 251 million euros to investigate the possibilities of this network, which will eventually replace 5G.

This new 6G network will serve to totalize the concept of Artificial Intelligence, and will allow greater interaction with devices connected to the Internet . According to IDC, by 2025 we will have more than 75 billion IoT (Internet of Things) devices globally.
