Covid-19: "We can avoid a second wave if we respect the barrier measures"


INTERVIEW - Prof. Pittet, Swiss infectious disease specialist, takes stock of the coronavirus epidemic which is once again progressing in France.

At a time when the number of cases of Covid-19 increases again, that the wearing of the mask outside is essential, like Paris or Saint-Tropez, many questions are being asked about the management of the pandemic by France. Prof. Didier Pittet, infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist at the University Hospitals of Geneva, was tasked by Emmanuel Macron with chairing a commission to assess the management of the coronavirus crisis in France. LE FIGARO. - In recent weeks, we have observed an increase in cases of Covid-19 in France. Are we in the second wave?

Prof. Didier PITTET. - No, we are precisely on the tail of a first wave. This means that we have succeeded in containing the accelerated transmission of the virus and its impact on health systems, at the cost of very significant economic and social consequences. A wave is a metaphor. It corresponds to an increase in cases, which must be dealt with in hospitals.
