The second generation of the Mercedes GLA has appeared. In this driving report, you can find out which characteristics make this SUV so special.

  • The SUV versions of the various Mercedes * series have secured a permanent place in the model range.
  • There is one high-seater for each of the A, B, C, E and S classes.
  • The second generation of the GLA is now at the start, which we were able to subject to an everyday test in the 220d 4Matic version.

Mercedes GLA: Lots of space and flexibility

The GLA is now a clear commitment from Mercedes to the SUV *. A higher seating position and good all-round visibility make it easier to keep an overview in city traffic, and there are plenty of electronic helpers and assistants on board. Flexible trunk thanks to the sliding rear seat, plenty of legroom for the rear passengers and the three-part backrest make the Mercedes a versatile base.

The Mercedes GLA is a pleasant mile eater

It looks quite dignified not only because of the very noble materials used in our test car. The engine also adapts to this, and although it produces a whopping 190 hp , it does not want to constantly display this power. It reaches the top speed of 219 km / h without any problems, runs calmly and confidently, but it is still pleasantly forward much slower. The GLA is a mile eater, but one of the more deliberate kind.

Sporty around the corner

Of course, we also tried out the sports program and chased the Mercedes quickly and efficiently around corners. He can do that easily without reaching his limits too quickly. Of course you notice the weight of 1 . 670 kilograms , but the GLA cannot be disturbed. Even so, you can feel that this is not his preferred way of moving forward.

MBUX - a big thing

The cockpit provides information and entertainment at the highest level, and the MBUX multimedia system is on board - its functionality is described on 161 of the 716-page operating instructions. So there's a lot in there. But honestly, we didn't take the time to grasp all the details and possibilities.

The new GLA: Typically Mercedes

The old song of Mercedes - typical peculiarities can also be sung here: indicators and windshield wipers sit on the same steering column stalk, the switch for the rear wiper is small and difficult to operate, the switches and buttons for seat adjustment are in the door. Drivers of the brand have long got used to it and no problem, but converters - and there could be quite a few for the GLA - that may deter. We were annoyed by the loud stapling of the indicators .

Economical in consumption

In Eco - mode , the minimum consumption was 5 , 8 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers , but we also recorded more than eight liters on the same distance. In the middle of our consumption was 6 , 5 liters . The base price for the GLA 220 d 4Matic is 37,080 euros. Our test car costs around 70,000 euros.

Many pluses - but this price!

The GLA is a practical companion in everyday life, performs its tasks with flying colors and can also collect many plus points as a pleasant touring car. You only have to swallow hard at the price. (Volker Pfau) * tz.de is part of the nationwide Ippen-Digital editorial network.
