South Korea reports as many new cases as it did last in March

9:29 a.m.: South Korea has recorded as many new corona cases within 24 hours as it did at the beginning of March. As the "Guardian" reported, citing the AFP news agency, 166 infections were reported. So far, 15,039 infections and 305 deaths have been registered in the country. In view of the latest figures, the government is forced to take stricter measures to combat the spread of the virus. In the capital Seoul and the neighboring regions, stricter contact restrictions apply again.

Federal Council President Woidke criticizes the advance of some countries

8.56 a.m .: Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) has called on the states to work closely on corona rules and warned them against profiling. "It was very effective for Germany that the federal states coordinated very closely with the federal government in March and April," said the current Federal Council President of the dpa news agency. "It was the basis for getting through this corona crisis relatively lightly and moderately."

Woidke criticized the fact that individual countries went forward with their own proposals, but did not name any names. The "permanent advance" of some federal states unsettled the people, said Woidke. In view of the increasing number of new corona infections in Germany, the Prime Minister does not currently consider loosening the existing restrictions to be necessary. "It must not happen that the health system in Germany is overwhelmed," he said. "We're in a marathon with unlimited kilometers. We don't know how long this path will be."

Lifeguards also have to keep their distance

8.50 a.m.: The lifeguards on the Baltic Sea are in a dilemma this summer. The distance rules in force due to the pandemic made rescue operations more difficult, said Hans-Jörg Andonovic-Wagner from the German Life-Saving Society in Lübeck-Travemünde. In addition, many of the guard stations are not fully staffed because a number of volunteer rescuers have canceled their work for fear of infection.

On the beach in Warnemünde in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the lifeguards of the DRK water rescue service keep their distance during their operations. If close patient contact cannot be avoided, there are masks, gloves and protective gowns for the helpers, said their boss Lukas Knaup. Overall, according to the DLRG, the number of bathing deaths has decreased compared to the previous year due to the cool weather in spring and at the beginning of summer. So far there have been 192 bathing deaths nationwide.

1415 new infections registered in Germany

6:07 a.m.: The number of known new infections with the corona virus in Germany has decreased slightly compared to the previous day. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the health authorities in Germany reported 1415 new infections within one day.

Since the beginning of the corona crisis, at least 222,828 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus. Six new deaths have been reported since the previous day. According to the RKI, the number of deaths in connection with a corona infection is now 9231. By Saturday, 200,800 people had survived the infection according to RKI estimates.

The number of reproductions, or R-value for short, was 1.08 in Germany according to RKI estimates with data as of August 14, midnight. This means that one infected person infects a little more than one other person on average. The R-value depicts the infection rate about one and a half weeks beforehand.

Baerbock calls for tests for all teachers and educators after the vacation

04.44 a.m.: Green leader Annalena Baerbock calls for systematic tests for teachers and educators who come back from vacation. So far, the test offers are voluntary and random, said Baerbock the newspapers of the Funke media group. "The first failures of schools and daycare centers after the summer vacation show, from my point of view, that every teacher who comes from vacation should first be tested."

While children and adolescents are separated according to age group to protect against infection, the teachers at many schools change from class to class, Baerbock said. Every school also needs a ventilation concept. "If windows can only be tilted in some places, then a craftsman has to come and install new windows if necessary. There must be money for that," said the party leader.
