Shortly before this year marks the 40th anniversary of John Lennon's assassination in front of his Manhattan home, his killer Mark David Chapman apologized to the musician's widow, Yoko Ono, and said he was constantly thinking about his "despicable act."

The court has for the 11th time rejected Chapman's request for release from prison, following a hearing last month.

Chapman, 65, has been in jail since the murder he committed.

According to the transcript of the hearing published in the foreign media, it appears that his request was rejected on the grounds that his release "would be contrary to the welfare of the company."

During the hearing, Chapman said he murdered Lennon for "fame," and said he deserved the death penalty.

"I just want to repeat that I'm sorry for my crime," he said, "I have no excuse. I think it's the worst crime anyone can do to an innocent person."

Chapman added that Lennon "was very famous. I did not kill him because of his character or the type of person he was. He was a family man. He was an icon. He was a person who talked about things we can talk about now and that's great."

Chapman apologized to Lennon's family, revealing that he was thinking about the murder "all the time."

"I killed him because he was very, very, very famous, and that's the only reason, and I was looking for self-glory, very selfish. I want to emphasize that very much. It was a very selfish act. I'm sorry for the pain I caused her (Leono). I think about it. All the time".

Chapman, who was 25 when he murdered Lennon, added that he is now older and can see that it was a "despicable and rather creepy act".

Asked if justice had been done, Chapman said: "I do not deserve anything, nothing," adding that he should have been sentenced to death following the murder.

"When you consciously plan to murder someone, and know it's wrong, and you do it yourself, it deserves the death penalty in my opinion."

Lennon's killer is married, and his 69-year-old wife lives near the jail.

Chapman said at the hearing that he is very religious and a "devout Christian."

Lennon was murdered on December 8, 1980 outside the Dakota building in New York where he lived.

When Lennon and Ono returned home from the recording studio and got out of the car, Chapman fired past Lennon five bullets.

The first ball missed and four balls hit his back and shoulder.

Lennon died before he arrived at the hospital.

After shooting in Lennon, Chapman threw his gun to the ground, pulled out the book "The Catcher in the Rye" and read from it.
